So, mein Plan wurde etwas über den Haufen geworfen, als mir aufgefallen ist, dass mein Libba Bray Interview auf Englisch alleine 3 Seiten umfasst. Also muss ich das nun etwas einteilen und aufteilen und ihr werden öfters ein schönes Libba Bild hier sehen. Aber fangen wir am Besten mal ganz vorne an (und klauen “The Basics” von Libbas Webseite).

BIO #1: THE BASICS

Libba Bray is the New York Times bestselling author of The Gemma Doyle trilogy (A Great and Terrible Beauty, Rebel Angels, The Sweet Far Thing); the Michael L. Printz Award-winningGoing Bovine; Beauty Queens, an L.A. Times Book Prize finalist; and The Diviners series. She is originally from Texas but makes her home in Brooklyn, NY, with her husband, son, and two sociopathic cats.  




Wir haben mit den Fragen rund um die Diviners Reihe, die erst vor Kurzem auf den deutschen Markt kam, angefangen und sind mehrmals vom Thema abgekommen. So ist das nun mal, wenn man sich auf anhieb versteht.
We started with questions about Libbas Diviners Series, that just recently hit german bookstores and got lost along the lines a bit here and there. I guess that’s what happens, if you get along.
Woher kam die Idee für “The Diviners”?
Ich war schon immer von den 20er Jahren fasziniert. Es ist so eine farbenfrohe und schillernde Ära. Also wollte ich unbedingt etwas schreiben, dass in den 20er spielt und ich wollte außerdem etwas übernatürliches schreiben. Also ist es eine übernatürliche Serie, die in den 20er Jahren spielt und sich mit Politik und Verschwörungen befasst.
Es gab da mal diese Show in America “The X-Files” und irgendwann hab ich dann im Scherz gesagt, dass Diviners “X-Files mit Flappers” ist. Mein Editor nennt es “The great Gatsby trifft Stephen King.” Und ich meinte nur: Okay, dass nehm ich. Es ist also eine Zusammensetzung all der Dinge, die ich liebe.

Where did the idea for “The Diviners” come from?

I have always been fascinated with the 1920s. It’s just such a colorful period. So I really wanted to write something set in the 1920s and at the same time I wanted to write something supernatural. So it’s a supernatural series, set in the 1920s, that’s political, has conspiracies.
There was a show in America called “The X-Files” so I kinda jokingly call it “X-Files with Flappers”. My editor calls it “The Great Gatsby meets Stephen King”. And I was like I’ll take that. So it’s sort of a blending off all the things I really love.

Was garnicht so einfach sein kann, denn wir reden hier von vielen verschiedenen Dingen auf einmal.

Das stimmt, es ist viel. Ich habe mit viel gespielt. Manchmal denke ich, dass ich mir zuviel zumute.

Which has to be really hard to do since it is a lot of different things all in one.

It is a lot. I have played with a lot. Sometimes I feel like I bite off more than I can chew.



Es ist fast so, als würdest du in der Vergangenheit spielen, denn die Gemma Doyle Trologie spielt im Jahr 1895. Warum genau dieses Jahr?

Wegen der selben Faszination und es ist eine Homage an die ganzen gothischen, britischen Gesitergeschichten, die ich so sehr liebe. Außerdem denke ich, dass dir das Schreiben in der Vergangenheit erlaubt, über die Zukunft in einer versteckten Art und Weise zu schreiben.
Also, nehmen wir mal “The Diviners”. Ich habe mich viel mit dem Amerika nach 9/11 beschäftigt. Was da passiert ist, vorallem in den Bush Jahren, Sachen, die mich gestört haben. Das wollte ich erarbeiten und als ich mit der Research angefangen habe, habe ich festgestellt, dass es viele Parallelen zwischen den beiden Zeiten gibt.

Wirklich?

Ja, auch wenn es eine “Party-Party” Atmosphäre war in den 20er Jahren, wissen wir ja, dass es zu einem großen Crash hinführt. 2008, als ich mit dieser Serie begonne habe, ist die Wirtschaft zusammengebrochen. Nach dem ersten Weltkrieg, 1919/1920 gab es viele Bombenanschläge und sonstiges. Es sind viele Sachen schief gelaufen, es ist explodiert. So ist das nun mal. Leute kriegen Angst und es passieren viele schlimme Dinge auf einmal. 
Eins der größeren Teile von “The Diviners” beschäftigt sich mit dem “American Eugenics Movement”. Ich glaube, es hat 1912 angefangen, als das erste American Eugenics Treffen stattfand. In 1916 erschien dann das Buch “The passing of the great race”. Ein absolut rassistisches Buch, dass als Fakt verkauft wurde. Es gab viele aggressive Leute bei diesem Movement, wie zum Beispiel H.G. Wells, die der Meinung waren, dass man die Menschheit heilen könnte, wenn man sich nur gewisse Eigenschaften heraus nimmt. Es war ein sehr dunkeles Kapitel in der amerikanischen Geschichte und es hat viel beeinflusst, wie den Racial Purity Act von 1924.

It’s kind of like you live in the past. The Gemma Doyle Trilogy was set in 1895. Why is it set that year?

It’s sort of an homage to all those Gothic, british ghoststories I love so much and also I think that writing in the past allows you to write about the present in a really sneaky kind of way. So for instance with “The Diviners” there’s a lot of exploration of sort of post 9/11 America. Things that were going on, especially during the Bush years, things that bothered me. I wanted to be able to explore that so when I began to do the research on the 1920s there are absolute parallels between the two time periods.

Really?

Yeah, for instance although there is all this party-party atmosphere in the 1920s, first off all we know it’s leading up to a big crash. In 2008 when I began working on this series we just had this huge financial collapse. Post World War I, 1919/1920 there was a lot of anarchy, bombings and so suddenly there was this crackdown. That’s what happens. Things happen and then they get scared and then they crackdown.
One of the big things in “The Diviners” is the American eugenics movement. I believe it started in 1912, that’s when the first American eugenics council took place. Then in 1916 there was a book published in America called “The passing of the great race”. It’s a racist book but it was presented as fact. That’s what “The Diviners” is really about, our past. There were really aggressive people on that bandwagon like H.G. Wells, thinking this is going to cure societies ills if we can just kind of select certain traits. It was a very ugly chapter in American history and it influenced so much legislation, the racial purity act of 1924.


Wer ist dein Lieblingscharakter von “The Diviners” und warum?

Es gibt jede Menge Charaktere und ich weigere mich, einen Favoriten zu haben. Der Charakter, den ich gerade in dem Moment schreibe, ist mein Favorit.

Also, wenn da alle um das Quijabrett sitzen, springst du von Lieblingscharakter zu Lieblingscharakter?

Ja, die kämpfen um meine Anerkennung.
Es gibt wirklich sehr viele Charaktere in diesem Buch.
Jeder Charakter hat Eigenschaften, die ich absolut  liebe und natürlich hat jeder Charakter seine dunkelen Seiten.

Schaust du dir ab und zu deine Freunde an und denkst “Das wäre eine gute Eigenschaft für meinen nächsten charakter” oder wenn dich jemand wütend macht, denkst du dann “Die nächste Person, die in meinem nächsten Buch stirbt, wird deinen Namen tragen?” 

Ahhhhhhhh die Macht des Schreibens.
Ich plane meine Charaktere eigentlich nicht. Ab und zu kommt es vor, dass ich während des Schreibens feststelle, dass mich die oder die Eigenschaft eines Charakters an eine Person aus meinem Umfeld erinnert.

Who is your favorite character out of “The Diviners” and why?

There are a lot of characters and I refuse to pick a favorite. Whichever character I write at that moment is sort of my favorite.

So, when they are all sitting together playing with the Quijaboard, you jump from person to person?

Yes, they fight to death for my affection.
There are a lot of characters, that’s true.
There’s things with each character that I’m really drawn to and of course all characters have flaws.

Do you ever look at your friends and think “That would be a good trait for my next character?”
Or somebody pisses you off and you’re like “The next person that dies in one of my book will have your name.”

Ahhhhh writing as revenge.
I don’t actually sit down and plan my characters. What happens sometimes that as I write a character I’ll look at him and think “Hmmm that’s familiar. That’s a little like so and so.”
